::I am Shape!::
Tuesday, February 28, 2012
My class started on Shapes yesterday and as I introduced the topic, I shared what my daughter and I enjoyed watching on 'cbeebies' channel - Mister Maker, an art educational tv programme. I told my class that part of the show would always show the Shapes segment where 4 common shapes namely, circle, square, triangle and rectangle would do a shape dance. And of course, this is a great way to get pupils to remember and recognise the different shapes besides getting them excited watching the whole show. However only a few of my pupils knew who 'Mister Maker' is and the rest asked if I could show them a picture of Mister Maker.
Well, with the power of youtube and since I wanted to reinforce what were being taught yesterday and today, I showed to my pupils, Mister Maker and the shape dance. I was glad they enjoyed the lesson today.
As promised, this is an embedded video of the shape dance. Enjoy children!

::Week 6 Updates::
Sunday, February 12, 2012
Dear All,
1A had their choral reading assessment where they read one of the STELLAR Big Books as a group to their classmates. Before the assessment, pupils were showed how to maintain eye contact with the audience, read clearly with good pace and appropriate pitch. They were told to read with expression and some body movements. I believe this being their first time, some appeared nervous. In overall, I am still glad that my pupils put in the effort to try and even smile as they read and I told them we will definitely have more of reading together as a group to encourage teamwork and cooperation as well as confidence.
Just for your information, I have given out a Poetry in Motion worksheet to my pupils. There are a total of 3 poems for pupils to practise reading aloud at home. They will be assessed to read only one of the poems in class in week 7. The assessment will be similar to choral reading except that this will be done individually.
Other updates in week 6 would be the interesting assembly talk on Dental Care by our school dental therapist. Pupils are now more conscious about their teeth and why they need to look after their teeth well. We continued with our Digital Art lesson on Friday where pupils used the Microsoft PowerPoint shape tools to create pictures. During FTGP, we tackled on the issue of Making Friends. This is actually a common issue or I would say a challenge for some of our pupils. At times, our children are not aware that their actions and things they do and say can affect others. So we had a discussion and I have to act out some of the appropriate behaviours in dealing with their peers. I hope they learnt that by being nasty is never going to be the way to make friends. For the shy ones, it is always good to buddy them up. I welcome pair work activities like what we had during our Social Studies - Finding out your friend's favourites. Ms Salina somehow became one of their frends too. So 1A you better know my favourites, yah!
We played a simple Grammar game on Singular and Plural where pupils take turns to write the answer on the board. Parents can also try this game at home too, make it fun for your child but at the same time you are able to assess him or her on this grammar component. I let my pupils bring home the Grammar Book for them to read and revise 'Singular and Plural'. I will be going through more of this slowly in class.
In Week 7, I will be doing/continuing on: Looking forward to see you all!

::Our January Star Pupil and Best Group::
Sunday, February 5, 2012
Last week we calculated our group points and our Yellow group emerged as the Best Group for January. They scored the highest with 225 points for being cooperative, well-behaved and always putting in effort in taks given. I hope the rest of the groups would model after this group very good behaviour. In overall, as a class we did pretty well actually and because of that we will get our free activity period as a'token' for our effort in behaving well as a class. Jie Xin is our January Star Pupil. She has shown exemplary behaviour that she deserved this award. She is always polite to her friends and teachers. Je Xin put in the extra effort in her school work too. I see many others in our class showing this positive attitude and I hope they will continue with their effort and hopefully be highlighted as the Star Pupil in months to come.

Jie Xin - Our January Star Pupil
Keep up with the good work!

January Best Group - Our happy Yellow group members Anyway, our Mrs Wishy-Washy are parading their colourful costumes just outside 1A classroom!

What to look out for next week? - Running Reading Record
- Choral Reading (in a group)
- Math Topical Test 1 on Numbers to 10 and Number Bonds on Tuesday
- English: Reading a new Big Book since we are almost done with Dan the Flying Man
- Math: Moving on to Subtraction within 10 since Addition within 10 is almost complete
Let's hope for a great week yah!
